I’ve finally managed to integrate my search page into my site’s layout—with just a few changes to both my central content server script and the search script. However, if you want to use other themes and/or locales, you must now use this URL for the standalone version. It’s the same script, but with more options enabled, as you can see in the source code.
Also, we’ve sorted out Friday’s phone problem. There are two shelves, so essentially, we threw some junk off the bottom shelf and put the answering machine there, which apparently produced a sufficient distance between the two devices. Next, since the base station can support up to six handsets, I’m going to buy another one, so we can have a cordless phone on each floor. They’re dirt cheap anyway, and this way, I’ll finally be able to make phone calls in peace, without standing in the cold hallway—obviously, up until now, I would just use my cell instead.

Among other things, I bought a cordless phone today, since our old, corded one was acting up. You’d think buying a basic model like that wouldn’t cause any trouble, so after letting it charge for over 7 hours, I just plugged it in downstairs, only to find out the radio waves cause interference on our answering machine, producing an uninterrupted dead-annoying humming. The good news is the humming only occurs when the units are really close to eachother, the bad news is the shelf they’re on isn’t nearly wide enough to prevent it. For now, I put the old phone back and replaced the even crappier one we had upstairs with the cordless one. I’ll look into it tomorrow, but as it stands, I think I’m either going to end up getting a new corded phone or a new answering machine. Either way, I’d be replacing a rubbish component.
Some of the other stuff I bought includes a really hip Ben Sherman tee, Garnier Fructis Style Hard Glue hair gel—I use tons of the stuff—, a design metal ruler and finally several miscellaneous items I’m not authorized to disclose. Don’t worry: if they were dildos, I’d have told you already.

I ported my IE security spoof to XHTML 1.1—though it’s a semantics enthusiast’s worst nightmare—and implemented it at this site, just for the hell of it. In addition, you can click on the link for some basic instructions on how to implement it yourself if you like. Enjoy.

You will be pleased to know that I have made this web site almost completely XHTML 1.1 compliant. You have no doubt noticed a few changes already.
Also, the background switcher now uses alternate style sheets, which makes it pretty much dead in Internet Explorer—like other parts of the site. Opera handles style sheet selection reasonably well, but it doesn’t seem to remember your choice. Obviously, it all works like a charm in Mozilla Firefox, albeit with an extension. I’m not sure about other browsers. Anyone want to fill me in on Konqueror and Safari’s behavior, for instance?
Update: While I am painfully aware that XHTML 1.1 should be served as application/xhtml+xml, I have decided to continue serving my site as text/html until I figure out why Symbio’s comment links break when the page is served properly.
Update 2: Okay, now serving application/xhtml+xml. I just hacked the comment links in instead of using JavaScript code to insert them. Far from clean, but who’s counting?
Update 3: I changed the skin switcher a little. It still relies on alternate style sheets, but it discourages their active use. In other words, while you can choose a skin from the browser chrome, I personally feel using a cookie is more reliable. But I’m keeping all the skins in the header so you can do it the way you prefer. And now I’d best be heading to bed.
