Over the past couple of months, I have been going creative with my savings. Here’s the rundown (with some badass rounding):
Before: 100% at a Fortis savings account.
After: 70% at a Rabobank savings account, 25% in stock at Keytrade, 5% at an ING savings account.
Also, my main demand account is now at ING instead of Fortis. The reason? Sheer incompetence and lack of customer-friendliness on Fortis’s end. I immediately felt welcome at ING, which meant a great deal to me.
I have yet to close my Fortis account. Why? Allow me to elaborate. Yesterday, the last bit of money got wired to ING, and today, I spent the remaining 4 euro on my Proton card, so I was ready to wave Fortis goodbye. Hence, I was at the counter less than an hour later, where I was greeted—figuratively speaking—by yet another one of their disgruntled employees. When I informed her—politely, mind you—of my intention to close my account, the woman lost her last shred of dignity and gave me a boorish “Why?!” I told her I wasn’t satisfied with their service and after minutes on end of tiresome wrestling with her computer, she proceeded to ask me if I’d brought my Digipass, to which I replied “No.” At this point, she gave me this look as though it were bleeding obvious that I would need to provide the little thingamajig in order to close my account. Moreover, she bothered to explain: “It’s legal tender, so obviously you need to return it before you can close your account, otherwise you’d still be able to make payments.” I’m sorry, what? I didn’t know I could use my Digipass to pay at the supermarket, and even if I could, I don’t think it’d do much good, since it would be linked to a freaking non-existent account. Well, there’s no arguing with them, so I’ll have to return on Thursday with the Digipass. She even set up an appointment for some reason. I’m not even going to wonder about that.
